10 – The Old Cabinet My Husband Had Repaired Held a Small Reminder That Our Family’s Story Was Still Being Written

By the time the dinner rush slowed, my apron was damp near the waist.

I had spilled a little water while cleaning the serving counter.

There was also a small smear of potato on one pocket.

Walter would have laughed.

He used to come home with his clothes in much worse condition.

Once, after helping repair a table at Westdale, he returned with paint on both sleeves.

I asked how he'd managed that when he was supposed to be fixing a loose leg.

He said the job had become more complicated.

That was usually his explanation.

Everything became more complicated once Walter started trying to repair it.

But he always finished.

I looked down at my apron.

Then I smiled.

It felt good to have something ordinary to laugh about.

Clare approached while I was putting away serving utensils.

She asked whether I could come with her for a moment.

I wiped my hands.

Then I followed her into the hallway.

We passed the office where she'd made me coffee the previous Christmas.

The door was open.

I could see the photograph of Walter on the wall.

He was still carrying that folding table at the community picnic.

Still laughing.

I slowed without meaning to.

Clare noticed.

She stopped beside me.

"That picture is staying right where it is," she said.

I smiled.

"I'm glad."

For a long time, I had worried about what would happen to Walter's belongings after I was gone.

His collection had filled the basement.

His tools were in the garage.

His old flannel shirts were folded in my drawers.

I had imagined those things being sorted and given away someday.

The thought used to upset me.

Now I was beginning to understand that objects mattered because of the memories attached to them.

And some memories could be shared.

Walter's photograph belonged at Westdale.

It showed him doing something he loved.

Helping.

Laughing.

Being part of a community.

I liked knowing the volunteers saw it.

Clare led me toward the storage room.

I knew where we were going before we reached the door.

The gray cabinet stood against the far wall.

It looked much the same as it had the previous year.

A little dent near the corner.

Two metal doors.

A paper snowflake taped to the front.

I walked toward it.

Then I noticed the label.

The familiar words were still there.

WALT'S CABINET.

But something had changed.

Beneath the old writing, another line had been added.

AND JO'S.

I stopped.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

I read the words again.

Then I looked at Clare.

She was smiling.

I felt my eyes fill.

It was such a small addition.

Two words.

But they seemed to carry everything that had happened since the previous Christmas.

Walter had repaired the cabinet.

I had returned to Westdale.

The donation had helped families.

And our son had repaired the same door when it needed attention again.

Somehow, the cabinet had become part of all our lives.

I touched the metal.

It was cool beneath my fingers.

I remembered standing there a year earlier.

I had been hurt by Renee's phone call.

I had wondered whether my family still wanted me around.

I had come to Westdale because I couldn't bear to drive home.

Then I saw the label Gus had put on the cabinet.

WALT'S CABINET.

I cried because it proved somebody still remembered my husband.

Now I was looking at another label.

AND JO'S.

I didn't know who had added it.

I didn't ask.

I didn't need to.

Clare stood quietly beside me.

She understood I needed a moment.

I looked at the repaired door.

Adam had worked on it with Gus.

He told me it closed perfectly.

I tried it gently.

The door shut without catching.

I laughed through my tears.

"Well, look at that."

Clare smiled.

"Your son did a good job."

I nodded.

"He did."

I thought about Walter teaching Adam to use tools when he was young.

Those lessons hadn't always gone smoothly.

Adam was impatient.

Walter could be stubborn.

Sometimes they disagreed over the simplest things.

I remembered hearing them in the garage.

Walter explaining something.

Adam insisting he understood.

Then a few minutes later, Walter explaining it again.

I used to stand in the kitchen and laugh.

Now Adam was helping repair furniture at Westdale.

He was learning from Gus.

And he'd fixed something his father had repaired years earlier.

I wished I could tell Walter.

Then I realized I didn't need to imagine his reaction.

I knew exactly what he'd say.

He would inspect the door.

Open it.

Close it.

Maybe test the hinges.

Then he'd tell Adam the job looked good.

And he would be proud.

I ran my fingers lightly along the cabinet.

It wasn't beautiful.

It wasn't valuable.

If someone had tried to sell it, they probably wouldn't have received much.

But it had become one of the most meaningful things in the building.

Not because of what it was.

Because of who had cared for it.

Clare let me stand there as long as I needed.

Then she said there was something else she wanted to show me.

I turned toward her.

She gestured back toward her office.

We walked down the hallway.

The building was quieter now.

Most of the guests had finished eating.

Volunteers were beginning to clean.

I could hear dishes clattering in the kitchen.

Somebody laughed near the entrance.

It was the sound of a place that had worked hard all morning.

We reached Clare's office.

I stepped inside.

Walter's old volunteer photograph still hung on the wall.

I looked at it.

Then I noticed another frame nearby.

I hadn't seen it earlier.

It showed a youth hockey team.

The photograph was familiar.

Very familiar.

I moved closer.

There was Walter in the back row.

He wore his coaching jacket.

His hair was darker than I remembered it in later years.

He was smiling proudly.

In the front row stood Adam.

Nine years old.

Holding a little trophy.

I stared at the picture.

It was the team photograph from 2002.

The one I'd kept with the black puck and youth hockey program.

The one I'd given Adam the previous Christmas.

I turned toward Clare.

She explained that Adam had brought the picture to Westdale.

He wanted it displayed beside his father's volunteer photograph.

I looked back at the frame.

My son hadn't mentioned doing that.

Not once.

He had told me about repairing the cabinet.

He had talked about helping Gus.

But he hadn't said anything about the photograph.

I felt a tightness in my throat.

Clare said Adam thought Walter would have liked having it there.

I nodded.

He would have.

Walter had always been proud of his years coaching children.

He loved hockey.

But more than that, he loved watching Adam learn.

I remembered the first goal.

The puck.

The handwriting on the tape.

February 17, 2002.

I remembered Adam sitting beside me on Christmas Day, struggling to believe his father had saved it.

He had thought Walter was disappointed when he stopped playing.

Now he had brought that photograph to Westdale.

Not to prove he had been a good hockey player.

Not to show off a childhood trophy.

But because he wanted people to see his father as he remembered him.

A coach.

A volunteer.

A man who loved his son.

I stood looking at the picture.

There were nine-year-old Adam's oversized helmet and Walter's familiar smile.

I remembered how carefully my husband had preserved the photograph.

Now Adam had chosen to share it.

That mattered.

For years, I had believed Walter's collection was something I had to protect.

I kept everything in the basement because I was afraid of losing more of him.

Then I sold most of it.

I thought I was giving up something important.

But the few things I kept had found their way into our lives again.

The puck helped Adam understand his father's pride.

The photograph now hung where Walter had volunteered.

And the money had helped families keep their homes.

Nothing had been wasted.

That was the thought that came to me as I stood in Clare's office.

Nothing had been wasted.

Not Walter's years collecting.

Not his years volunteering.

Not the time he spent trying to teach Adam to repair things.

Not even the grief that had brought me back to Westdale.

Those experiences had become part of something larger.

I looked at Clare.

"Adam did this?"

She nodded.

"He thought his father would want it here."

I smiled.

"He's probably right."

Clare stepped closer to the pictures.

She told me the volunteers liked seeing them together.

One showed Walter carrying a folding table.

The other showed him standing behind a youth hockey team.

Two ordinary moments from his life.

One as a volunteer.

One as a father.

I thought about the way people are remembered.

We often imagine it will be through important achievements.

Awards.

Possessions.

Money.

But Walter hadn't needed any of those things to leave a mark.

He had fixed a cabinet.

Coached children.

Delivered groceries.

Helped neighbors.

And loved his family.

Those were the things people remembered.

I stayed in front of the photographs for a long time.

Clare didn't hurry me.

Eventually, I thanked her.

She said she was glad I'd seen them.

Then she returned to her work.

I remained in the office another minute.

I looked at Walter's face in the hockey photograph.

Then at Adam's.

I thought about how much time had passed.

The boy in the picture was now a father himself.

He had two children who loved their grandfather's Christmas traditions.

He had a wife who was learning to speak more honestly.

He had a mother who was learning to accept help as well as give it.

And he was volunteering at the place his father had loved.

I wished Walter could see him.

Then I smiled.

In a way, I thought, everything Adam was doing showed that Walter's lessons had stayed with him.

Even the ones he'd seemed to ignore.

I looked at the photograph one last time.

Then I turned toward the door.

There was still cleaning to do.

My family was waiting.

And Christmas wasn't finished.

Source: <a
